I am Holly Fugitt, co-owner of Hurdles Dyslexia Clinic, Inc.
Over the years my life’s journey has taken me many places and allowed me to wear several hats. I was born in Peoria, Illinois but Whittier, California is my home town. I have two awesome adult children and four grandchildren. My journey has taken me up and down California’s coast from San Diego to Riverside to San Francisco’s East Bay area of Fremont and Livermore. My family also spent several years in and around Tokyo, Japan. My “hats” of life include Sunday School teacher and director, Boy and Girl Scout leader, soccer coach, para-educational aide, substitute teacher and much more. My most favorite life role has been and continues to be that of Mom and Honeygram to my grandkids. I’ve also been extremely blessed by lifelong friends who’ve enhanced my journey with their encouragement and love and laughter.
After relocating from So. California to the Bay Area town of Fremont I taught preschool for five years and then became the reading resource specialist at a private school for almost fourteen years. I am passionate about reading, writing and spelling because those subjects were the most difficult for me as a young child. I am dyslexic but it would be many years before I was properly diagnosed. I noticed most of my students struggle with decoding words, spelling, reading fluency and comprehension, just as I had. It became my goal in life to teach reading, spelling, and writing in a manner that made sense to my students.
I studied everything I could about the characteristics of dyslexia and soon learned about a consistent method that, if used properly, would greatly enhance my students reading and spelling skills. Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory, highly structured, systematic and direct instructional method. It engages all the senses in about letters and sounds. Several reading programs use the Orton-Gillingham method including The Wilson Reading System, The Slingerland Program, Language!, Lindamood-Bell Phonemic Sequencing Program (LiPS) and the Barton Reading and Spelling System. Hurdles Dyslexia Clinic uses the Barton Reading and Spelling System. We are also trained in Slingerland and LiPS.
My educational background includes BA degrees from Shasta Bible College, Teaching Credential through the Association of Christian Schools International, Certification in tutoring and dyslexia screening through the Barton Reading and Spelling System, Certificates through the Slingerland Institute for Reading, Lindamood-Bell’s LiPS, Seeing Stars, Math, Making Math Real Institute, Handwriting Without Tears Workshop, Wrightslaw training conferences, and Dyslexia Training Institute’s Dyslexia Advocate Certificate Program.
